Visual Arts: The Main Options

A reference of the main painting, clay and digital art options for a child aged 9–12 in Singapore: school, national platforms, community, or private lessons.

In the table, CCA means co-curricular activity: a group run by a school. Some means at least one school’s own page confirms it; a note in brackets says where the page doesn’t say which age group. A dash means “not covered here”, not that the option doesn’t exist.

School-based (CCA): MOE schools

Art Club, sometimes called Visual Art Club, is a common Visual Arts CCA across Singapore primary schools. Forms listed on schools’ own pages include painting, sculpture and clay, ceramics, digital art, mosaic, textile work such as batik and cross-stitch, and mixed media. Availability, specific media offered, and schedule vary by school.

At least one school runs an Art Elective Programme for Primary 2 to Primary 6, alongside a separate junior and senior Art Club.

Several schools’ Art Club pages mention exhibiting pupils’ work, including at the Singapore Youth Festival Art Exhibition.

Most MOE schools also bring in outside artists and arts groups through the National Arts Council’s Arts Education Programme. Its programmes span six art forms, including visual arts and digital media.

School-based (CCA): international schools

International schools set their own programmes. One large international school’s list of activities includes creative art, pottery, and sewing and embroidery, but doesn’t say which age groups take part. Another runs an arts programme for Years 5 and 6 students who show particular strengths in dance, drama and art. Years 5 and 6 are the last two years of its junior school, which is for ages 7 to 11. Check directly with your child’s school what is running this term.

National platforms (outside any single school)

Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Art Exhibition. In 2026, SYF ran across three platforms: the Arts Presentation (covered in the Performing Arts guide), SYF Celebrations, and the Art Exhibition. The Art Exhibition ran from 4 to 19 July and showed students’ artworks. MOE said the 2026 Art Exhibition invited secondary and pre-university students. Primary school art clubs have taken part before: two primary schools’ own pages report their pupils’ entries in 2025.

Community

PAssionArts. The People’s Association set up PAssionArts in 2012 as a community art movement, supported by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth. Its annual PAssionArts Festival, organised by community arts and culture clubs, includes hands-on arts activities and visual art exhibitions and installations. At least one primary school’s Art Club page says its pupils’ work has been shown at PAssionArts exhibitions.

Community club courses. People’s Association community clubs also list children’s drawing courses on the OnePA portal, such as cartoon drawing for ages 5 to 12.

Private lessons

Available from art studios: drawing, painting, digital art and clay classes.

Not covered here

This page doesn’t cover photography, printmaking, or crafts-focused hobby classes unrelated to drawing, painting, sculpture or digital art. Community club painting and digital art classes aren’t covered here either.
