Volunteering: What We Found

What we found for a child aged 9 to 12 who wants to volunteer in Singapore: three charities’ own age rules, and where to look for more.

We checked the volunteer pages of eight organisations that family listings often suggest for children. Many of their roles are for adults or older teenagers. Three have a route that covers some of the 9 to 12 age range, according to their own pages. The table sets out each one’s age rule as the charity states it.

What we found

Willing Hearts. A charity kitchen that cooks and delivers meals to people in need. Its volunteer page says volunteers must be 5 or older. Children aged 5 to 12 must come with a parent, teacher or other adult. Kitchen tasks include washing and cutting vegetables and packing meals. The kitchen runs daily from 5am to 5pm, in four-hour shifts. Individuals and small groups can walk in without booking, for at least four hours; larger groups book a slot.

The Food Bank Singapore: Juniors Club. A programme for children aged 5 to 15, each accompanied by a parent or guardian throughout. A session lasts about three hours. It may involve packing food rations and delivering them door to door to people in need, and some sessions are workshops instead. It costs $60 per child, which the food bank says goes towards buying food for the people it supports. Sessions are split by age: in 2026, sessions for ages 10 to 15 ran in June, and sessions for ages 5 to 9 ran in September. The food bank announces new sessions on its social media.

TOUCH Community Services: Meals-on-Wheels. Volunteers deliver meals to frail seniors, most of whom live alone, on foot, by public transport or by car. TOUCH’s page says volunteers must be 18 or older, or 12 to 17 with parental consent. It recommends that younger volunteers go in pairs. The page doesn’t mention children under 12. The preferred commitment is one lunch or dinner delivery a week.

Of the three, only the Juniors Club is organised around children. The other two are adult volunteering that a child can join under the charity’s own age rule.

Where to look for more

The government’s volunteering portal, volunteer.gov.sg, lists opportunities from many organisations. Its filters are by cause and skill, not by age, so check each listing’s own age rule.

The National Parks Board’s Garden Bird Watch, a bird survey that children under 12 can join with a parent or guardian, is in the STEM guide.

Habitat for Humanity Singapore’s home-repair programme has a minimum age of 15. Lions Befrienders’ volunteer roles that state an age are for 18 or 21 and over. Lions Home For The Elders, ItsRainingRaincoats and The Soup Kitchen Project don’t state a volunteer age on the pages we read, so they aren’t listed.

This page doesn’t say whether any activity is offered as a Direct School Admission talent area. Each secondary school sets its own talent areas for each year’s exercise, so check the school’s own DSA page and MOE’s DSA-Sec information.
